In Pride and Prejudice, a movie adaptation of the Jane Austen classic starring Kiera Knightly, a young woman learns that first impressions can often be wrong. Quick judgements and rash actions make life a bit difficult for the main character Lizzie, but in the end she, of course, finds her one true love. The movie is a good mix of sarcasm and romance, which makes it right up my alley.
In one scene, Lizzie is traveling with her aunt and uncle to take her mind off of her pretty dismal life. She had just turned down a marriage proposal from the gorgeous and adorably shy Mr. Darcy, and she needs a distraction. Cut to the dramatic scene where Kiera Knightly is standing on the edge of some sort of mountain or cliff with her dress billowing in the wind around her.. The lighting is just perfect and makes the surrounding countryside and Lizze look absolutely beautiful. The background music flares and becomes rich and full It’s one of those classically dramatic moments that makes you want to BE that person standing on that cliff in that dress with that lighting and that background music.
Well I got my moment this past weekend when we went to the Cliffs of Moher. I stood up there on those cliffs with the most beautiful weather we’ve had here this entire trip and thought, “If I were wearing a dress and had some dramatic background music, I could BE Kiera Knightly.” Except for the fact that I’m 4 inches shorter than her and don’t look anything like her. But that doesn’t matter. I felt like Lizzie at that moment in time.
Our last field trip was a short one, but I still had a lot of fun. After stopping at the cliffs on Saturday, we went to the flying boat museum (yes. Flying boats. I didn’t know they were a thing either.) where I thought about my dad a lot. He would have loved to go to that museum, and I wish he had been there with me. Then we drove to the town of Dingle, which is absolutely adorable, and took a scenic drive along the coast. That night we stayed not in a hostel, but in a house all to ourselves. It was so nice! I wish we had stayed in places like that this entire trip, and it was a good way to spend the night on our last trip. On Sunday we went to the Blarney Castle and I got to not only kiss the Blarney Stone, but make a wish on the Wishing Steps. I should be set for life now!

It was a great last field trip, and we had the most beautiful weather for it. And after today, I’m officially done with classwork for the semester as well. Finishing up the classes was a little more stressful than I thought it would be. We had a final essay for literature and a final test for history. The paper wasn’t hard to write at all since we had so much material to work with from all of our reading over the course of the semester, but the final test for history was stressful. 400 years of history crammed into one test is pretty scary. But don’t be alarmed! We got to use our text books, supplementary readings, notes and a study guide on the test. It really wasn’t that bad, we just weren’t expecting it and didn’t find out we could use the resources on the test until right before we took it.
Now all that’s left is a quick day trip to Coole Park in place of literature class tomorrow and then we’re done. Thursday is going to be a packing day, and Friday we all get up and get on a plane in Shannon that will bring us home! I know I’ve said it before, but I have to say it again. At this point, I am definitely ready to be home. I’m going to miss certain parts of Ireland, like spending a day in Galway (and going to the aquarium and casino) and getting to see beautiful places like Kylemore Abbey and the Blarney Castle, but it’s definitely time to be home. After living in such close quarters with the same people for so long, I’m ready to get away and be around my friends and family. I think we’re all at that point.
The next time you hear from me, I’ll be back on American soil! Man, that is so exciting to say.
Until next time!
